About us

Abbey Training Services Ltd., was formed on the 21st February 2000 by Alan Baker

Alan has spent his working life in the freight forwarding industry, initially concentrating on sea freight, but in the late 1970's he joined a local Air Freight Forwarder and spent the next 24 years managing their Southampton Branch

Since Lockerbie, in 1988, there has been a radical change in the way Air Cargo is handled and the Department forTransport (DfT) introduced the Aviation Security (Air Cargo Agents) Regulations 1993 to ensure that all consignments of cargo are screened for prohibited or suspicious articles prior to despatch.

Alan successfully submitted his training package for Aviation Security to the DfT and became a Certified Trainer.   He also applied and was accepted as an Air Cargo Security Validator for the new 'Known Consignor' process which started in August  2003. In addition he is now one of the three  British International Freight Association (BIFA) Cargo Aviation Security Trainers.

In November 2004 he qualified as an instructor in the recognition of firearms and explosives and in 2006 received his Threat Assessment Certificate from the DfT.

In May   2007 the Company was accredited to deliver The National X-Ray Competency Test for Cargo Screeners.

August 1st 2008 saw a major change in training.  Cargo Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 were replaced by new Cargo Levels A to G over a twelve month period.  Our training programmes had to be completely re-written and sent to the Department for Transport for approval.

Accreditation was received in March 2009 and the company now deliver the new courses.

In August 2010 the Company was granted approval to deliver The National Competency Test for Hold Baggage X-ray screeners.

In August 2014 the Cargo Syllabus changed again and the Level A to G have been replaced by 21 new Modules.

Candidates only take the Modules relevant to their job function
